Salesforce Rep Texting, and the Stack Behind It
A rep opens a Salesforce Lead, sees the phone number, and wants to send a quick text. Salesforce can now do that natively: SMS Messaging for Sales, generally available since July 2025, adds an SMS option to the Activity Composer on Lead, Contact, and person account records. The catch is what it builds on. Setup requires Digital Engagement, the messaging product Salesforce now sells as Agentforce Contact Center Digital at a listed $75 per user per month, plus Omni-Channel routing and an SMS channel for each rep, and Salesforce Voice if a rep’s calls and texts should come from the same number. Salesforce’s own considerations page adds that SMS messages don’t support activity reporting, so texting data lives in Messaging Sessions rather than the activity reports your managers already run. Teams without that stack still watch reps text from personal phones, where nothing logs and the conversation vanishes from your pipeline.
Kixie’s native Salesforce integration takes a lighter route: rep-level, two-way texting on Leads and Contacts, with no Digital Engagement setup, from the same number the rep calls from, with every message written back into Salesforce as activity your reports can read.
How Kixie Texting Works in Salesforce
Every Text Logs as a Completed SMS Task
Kixie matches each message to the Lead or Contact by phone number and logs it as a completed SMS Task on the record. The same activity syncs upward to the associated Account and to the most recent Opportunity, the identical roll-up path that powers Kixie’s automatic call logging for Salesforce. When duplicates share a number, Kixie syncs to the last-referenced record and prefers the Contact over the Lead, and an unknown inbound number can auto-create a Lead whose texting history survives conversion to a Contact.
The Task Type Setup Real Admins Recognize
One ten-minute admin step makes it clean: in Setup, your admin edits the Task object’s Type picklist and adds the values Incoming SMS and Outgoing SMS, or a single SMS value. From then on, texts are properly typed Tasks, which means activity reports, list filters, and Flows can all key on texting specifically. It is a small detail, and it is the difference between SMS as a note and SMS as reportable pipeline activity.
Salesforce Automations That Send Texts
Here is the part Salesforce admins ask about first. A Flow cannot send a text on its own without a messaging product behind it, but it can send an Outbound Message, and that webhook is the trigger Kixie’s documented auto-SMS recipe runs on. The automation fires, the Outbound Message posts to a Zapier catch hook, the Zap looks up the record owner, and Kixie sends the text from the record owner’s own direct Kixie number, with property tokens like the lead’s first name filled in. Kixie’s article was written for workflow rules, which Salesforce stopped supporting on December 31, 2025, so build new triggers as record-triggered Flows. The recipe requires a Kixie Professional account and a Zapier Starter plan or higher.
The plays write themselves: a new owner assignment triggers an introductory text from that owner, a marketing email open triggers a two-minute-delayed nudge, or a call disposition logged from the Kixie dialer, which lands in Salesforce as a closed Task, triggers a follow-up text referencing the missed call. Chain those dispositions and texts together and you are running full call-and-text sequences, the territory of outbound cadences with Kixie and Salesforce. One boundary worth respecting: auto-SMS is a targeted tool for the right message at the right moment, not a blast channel.
Bulk Personalized Texts From a List View
The list views your team already maintains double as texting audiences. A rep selects records from a Lead or Contact list view and sends a templated, token-personalized message to each one from their own Kixie number. Every message logs to its own record as an SMS Task, so a fifty-person webinar follow-up produces fifty clean activity entries, not one untracked blast. Each recipient sees a one-to-one text from a real rep’s number, because that is what it is.
What You Need Before You Start
- Salesforce Professional edition or higher with API access. Kixie connects natively with a one-time authorization, no middleware.
- The Task Type picklist values. Add Incoming SMS and Outgoing SMS to the Task Type field so texts log as typed, reportable activity.
- A2P 10DLC registration. Texting US numbers from US numbers requires registering your business numbers, and Kixie supports registering the same numbers your reps call from.
