A toll-free phone number is a phone number that can be used to contact a business or service without being charged for the call. The most common prefix for toll-free numbers is 800, which is followed by a seven-digit phone number. Calls to 800 numbers are free for the caller, but the businesses or services that use them must pay for the calls.
In addition to 800 numbers, there are also 844, 855, 866, and 888 numbers. These are all toll-free numbers that can be used to reach organizations at no cost to the caller. Each of these prefixes has a different meaning, but in general, they all indicate that the caller will not be charged for the call.
Traditional toll-free numbers are usually country-specific, meaning it is free to call that number only from within the corresponding country. In the United States, toll-free phone numbers typically start with one of three area codes: 800, 888, or 877. Other countries have their own toll-free phone number prefixes.
